The Chêneau-Gensingen® Orthosis is an asymmetric, rigid Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO) for scoliosis designed with openings at the spinal concavities. The design is based on the principle that scoliosis should be addressed in 3-dimensions for a successful outcome. The orthosis is Schroth Method compatible, and like the Schroth Method, aims to improve the physical appearance of scoliosis. The brace openings allow for Schroth rotational breathing which means that while it is worn each breath is a corrective breath. It is also an over-correction brace meaning it strives for curve reduction (for adolescents) rather than simply halting curvature. A listing of Schorth Practitioners can be found on the Schroth Best Practice Academy website. Here's a link to our blog on what shirt to wear under your brace. What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown. Most cases are mild, but some children develop spine deformities that continue to become more severe as they grow. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space in the chest making it difficult for the lungs to function properly. What are the treatment goals?
We book an hour for your first appointment at which time, Eric Bapty, our Certified Orthotist will take a medical history and take measurements before suggesting a Treatment Plan (TP) based on his assessment and the prescription from your doctor. Treatment goals:
How is it made?
To fulfill your Treatment Plan (TP), our Certified Orthotist will perform an assessment that will include shape capture using our 3D scanner and digital imaging, and take all necessary measurements. A digital impression of the torso is created, which is modified to design your corrected digital model. A foam blank is shaped with a CNC carver to create the form which is used for hand molding your custom corrective Chêneau-Gensingen® Orthosis. The Certified Orthotist will guide you through your fitting appointment, assuring a custom fit. You (and your family, if applicable) will be instructed in your treatment protocol and arrange follow-up appointments to ensure continued fit and improved correction of your spinal curves. How to use your Brace
Our Certified Orthotist will ensure that the fit is correct, explain the wearing protocol, and offer information on any additional modalities appropriate for treatment. While the correction provided may take some time to get used to, the brace should not be painful. If pain persists after two weeks or if you experience rubbing or blisters, please book a follow-up appointment. As the brace will need to be worn through skeletal maturity, you may require more than one brace due to growth. As it it important that the brace fit optimally, it should be replaced once the brace no longer allows room for growth. Please Contact Us if you have any questions or concerns. What funding is there?
